Currently, India is facing a maternal mortality rate of 200 deaths per 100,000 live births and an infant mortality rate of 30 deaths per 1,000 live births (20 and 8 in developed countries, respectively). Acknowledging that these rates have improved over the last few years, the fact that only 55% of births are attended by health skilled staff proves a dire need for training and education regarding proper maternal and newborn healthcare.

AIF is focusing on MANSI in order to help reverse these threatening rates, via a combination of providing care, as well as education.

To create a sustainable difference, MANSI uses a two-pronged approach. The first component relies on home-based caregivers, who are trained, paid workers, placed permanently in the villages to administer birth and provide basic, daily medical support. The second component, Mobile Health Clinics, supports the caregivers via visits to the villages once every fortnight. Each clinic is equipped with a doctor, a nurse, and medical supplies.

With the help of funding from TATA steel, the program has currently seen a 19% decrease in mortality rates. It will take your help, however, to continue to decrease this mortality rate and eventually implement the model in more areas of the country. Any and every donation will help this goal become a reality.

• $20 Can cover cost of writing health messages for public awareness in one village.
• $50 Can cover cost of referring one sick newborn to hospital for treatment.
• $100 Can provide medical supplies and equipment to one village health worker for a year to save newborns.
• $500 Can train one village level health worker to take care of mothers and newborns in her community.

You will be voting for one of three initiatives:

Cause 1: Maternal and Newborn Survival Initiative (MANSI)
Did you know that 4% of all babies in India die within one month of birth?
In the Eastern state of Jharkhand alone, sufficient healthcare facilities, over 80% of deliveries are conducted at home without no aid from a skilled health professional. MANSI aims to improve this with mobile health clinics, neonatal care, and midwife driven home-baseddelivery assistance. MANSI has already reached 87 villages from their target of 174, and needs help to reach its goal.

Cause 2: Rickshaw Sangh
Did you know that there are an estimated 8 million cycle rickshaw drivers in urban areas across India but few of them actually own their rickshaws and most pay daily rent to an owner?
Their earnings barely sustain their families, and owning their vehicle is but a distant dream. On their own, rickshaw drivers have no credit. To foster ownership, AIF provides First Loss Default Guarantee (FLDG) to banks on the drivers’ behalf. Banks offer loans to AIF-recommended NGOs who in turn disburse them to individual drivers. In a little over a year, the rickshaw belongs to the driver and future earnings go into the well-being of their families and local communities. Help us grow this initiative.

Cause 3: Market Aligned Skills Training (MAST)
India is experiencing two significant demographic shifts – its population under the age of 25 is growing rapidly relative to its aging population and its population is rapidlyurbanizing. Through its MAST program, AIF is training unemployed youth with a 10th-grade education for employment in high-growth sectors, matching the demands of local area economies. MAST’s goal is to train 100,000 youth across India. Over 70,000 youth have been trained with an average job placement rate of 76 percent. Help us provide access to more youth today.

Event: Family Barbeque

Our biggest event of the year is here! Please join the AIF NYYP Board, Members’ Council and Gala Host Committee for our 5th Annual Gala on Saturday, May 19th at the Metropolitan Pavilion! All proceeds from the event will go to our selected initiative for the year, Naz Foundation.

Join us next Thursday, January 26th to mingle with other young professionals and learn more about the  impact your fundraising dollars can have on AIF’s partnership with Naz Foundation, a New-Delhi based NGO focused on improving the prevalence and  quality of care and support services for children impacted by HIV/AIDS. We will be hosting our first Happy Hour of 2012 from 7:30-10:30pm at Traffic in Hell’s Kitchen. This will be a  great time to come together after the holidays and support this worthy cause.

There will be an open bar from 7:30pm – 8:30pm including Coors draft beer, house sangria, and well  drinks. After 8:30pm, there will be a cash bar with drink specials for the rest of the evening!
